The most unfortunate part is that transportation has come to stay as it has become a part of our lives. These engines emit dangerous gases like nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons from their exhaust pipes. Apart from causing harm to those who breathe them in, these gases also react with the natural atmospheric gases rendering them also harmful.

These chemicals also contribute to air pollution but they don’t do as much damages as the other activities mentioned earlier.

You do not need a physician to realize that when people continuously inhale these harmful gases, their lungs will be in danger.

And once the lungs become damaged, it will affect other vital organs of the body. Some of the commonest diseases caused by continuous air pollution are asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), lung cancer and several other lung diseases.

While the diseases listed above are dangerous and life threatening, they are not the major reason for standing up against air pollution !

First of all, inhaling some harmful gases like mercury can lead to blocked veins and arteries. Mercury can block the arteries supplying the brain and this in turn can cause stroke. It does not always end in stroke. It could also lead to stunted brain development or even reduction in human intelligence.

When inhaled, it causes more brain disorder in than adults. In infancy, it can have effect on the brain which includes reduced cognitive functioning. It can also result in reduced verbal memory. All these are symptoms of a damaged brain.

When The Gym Isn’t As Healthy As It Seems

Who goes to the gym just to come back out sick? Seems like such an oxymoron, doesn’t it. Between treadmills and Zumba class, we’re either sculpting that perfect summer body or releasing built-up tension from the long work day.

But what if the same holy shrine that encompasses our own mini makeovers is also the same breeding grounds for ingesting high levels of dangerous gases? Well, hold on to your yoga pants because researchers from Portugal and Holland have found that the gym could actually be making you sick.

Picture this: You’re in the middle of spin class, pushing through that last minute of dear agony, and the class is hyperventilating in unison. Now while you may be exhaling that last bit of guilt over your third piece of chocolate cake, what you’re actually inhaling are high doses of hazardous gases. Among the culprits is carbon dioxide, which when put into perspective, makes total sense. You are in a confined space with intensified breathing and little to no air circulation. Now let’s go a step further. Not only are you inhaling high levels of CO2, but because you are breathing in and out of your mouth you actually end up taking the gases straight to your lungs, as opposed to being filtered through your nose.

As a matter of fact, not only is CO2 one of the main saboteurs to your health routine, the study found that certain gyms also had airborne dust and formaldehyde levels exceeding all the safety standards for indoor air quality! Long-term exposures to such substances are unclear, but many believe that at high levels these gasses are cancer causing agents.

This is one of the indoor pollutants that can be found in the gym. Formaldehyde can be produced from some upholstery of furniture and carpets that can be found in gymnasiums. The adverse effects of formaldehyde when introduced into the human body over a long period of time cannot go unmentioned and also cannot be underestimated.

• Carbon monoxide

Carbon monoxide is a product of incomplete combustion. Carbon monoxide readily combines with hemoglobin in the human body to form carboxyhaemoglobin which prevents the transfer of oxygen to tissues. The affinity of hemoglobin to carbon monoxide is 210 times its affinity to oxygen. This pollutant can be found in considerable amounts in gyms and the adverse effects to human health are many including headache, dizziness, nausea and breathing difficulties. The effects of carbon monoxide over a long period of time can also not be underestimated.

• Molds

These can come from microbes such as fungi that can grow in heating and cooling systems due to excessive moisture. With such indoor equipments commonly found in gyms, there actually exist some considerable health effects that can come as a result of breathing in these toxic pollutants.

Other indoor pollutants that may be present in some amounts in gyms include but not limited to ozone, asbestos and some hydrocarbons which when exposed to the human body over a long period of time can cause adverse health effects.
With these research findings that the gym, a place where people go to improve the general state of their health can actually be having an opposite effect due to the presence of toxic indoor pollutants, then it remains to be seen what can be done to improve on the quality of air we breathe so that the health of people exercising in the gym will not be at stake for the long haul.

Vision problems? Include air pollution in the possible causes

Recent AIIMS study shows how much air pollution exposure  is damaging your eyes.

We have known for many years that air pollution can directly affect our health, and that living in heavily polluted areas can cause an increase in the incidence of lungs and heart issues. What we didn’t know was that air pollution can damage our eyes, too. AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Science) recently conducted a survey that involved 5000 people who visited the hospital between 2013 and 2014, giving them a questionnaire aimed at assessing the prevalence of eye problems.

What did AIIMS discover?

According to the results of the survey, around 10-15% of the people who responded had symptoms like watery eyes, redness or itchiness, and 65% of those people were men between 20 and 40 years. Many people complained because their eye problems affected their productivity, and interfered with their life.

The doctors involved in the survey said that in the past dry eyes were a common problem in elderly patients, but that now younger people are getting them too. The medical director of Centre for Sight also said that the number of patients who are treated for chronic irritation of the eyes and allergic conjunctivitis is getting higher every year, and that the patients present the same symptoms all year round, while in the past they were more common during the pollen season.

What caused these symptoms?

Prolonged exposure to air pollution affects the tear ducts, which is why many people complain of dry eyes. Also, particular matter and toxic fumes can adhere to the outer surface of the eye in the same way pollen does, damaging the tear film. These problem can worsen and become chronic, putting the patients at risk of severe complications.

Is the level of air pollution in India comparable with the ones in Europe and America?

The study was conducted in India, which is together with China one of the most polluted country in the world. While the pro-capita emissions of greenhouse gases is low, India is heavily populated and so the levels of air pollution in big cities is very high. According to a research conducted in 2004, the level of particulate matter in the air (expressed in micrograms per cubic meter) was 150 in Delhi and 128 in Kolkata. Other cities had lower levels, for example Mumbai were the level was only 63.

During the same year, the level of particulate matter in big European and American cities was way lower: for example, it was around 30 in Milan and Rome, 11 in Paris, 22 in Berlin and 21 in London. It was 21 in New York and 34 in Los Angeles.

This difference is due to the fact that developing countries such as India and China are still using fuelwood and biomass as their primary sources of energy. Also, these countries don’t regulate vehicle emissions as tightly as other countries do, and since the recent economic development led to an increase in the number of vehicles on the streets, there was also a big increase in air pollution.

Then, why should we worry?

The figures quoted above are more than 10 years old, and they are also an average. Since then, we haven’t done nearly enough to lower emissions and pollution. Even if European and American cities are on average less polluted than Indian and Chinese cities, there are still people who are at risk of suffering eye problems caused by air pollution: for example, construction workers who work in busy streets, traffic officers, or people who like to run and cycle outdoors.

Also, a study presented at the 177th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2013 revealed that people living in areas with high level of air pollution were three to four times more likely to suffer from dry eye syndrome. The “areas with high level of air pollution” mentioned in the study were American cities like Chicago or New York, compared with rural areas where the level of pollutants was lower.

What precautions can we take in order to protect ourselves?

The only long-term measure that can lower of risk of having eye issues due to pollution is to decrease the level of air pollution. Until this happens, we must take steps in order to protect our eyes. It is helpful to wash the eyes regularly, avoiding rubbing them if they are itchy and using artificial tears instead. Wearing protective goggles can also help, especially when we are in heavily polluted areas.

While we cannot control the air quality outdoors, we can also take steps to have better air indoors: since low humidity worsen the symptoms, it can be helpful to use a humidifier. A high-quality air filter can also help making air cleaner in the home. Finally, there are supplements that can help lubricate the eyes and the skin, such as flaxseed oil, but it is important to speak with a doctor before starting to take any supplement.

Should i really ride my bike to work to stay fit?

Are cyclists more affected by pollution than people who commute by car?

Although cycling is considered healthier than driving, people who ride a bike within a city can be exposed to a significant higher amount of pollutants than people who commute to work by car. This year, the Fort Collins Commuter Study has published the first set of results of their study on the exposure to pollutants while commuting to work in different ways.

The participants were 45 healthy, non-smoking workers who resided in Fort Collins and commuted to work every day, either by bicycle or by car. They were equipped with a GPS and a monitoring device in order to track both their route and their exposure to air pollution.
A similar study was also conducted in Montreal by McGill’s Department of Civil Engineering, finding that even considering the lower levels of pollution usually found in Canadian cities, cyclists were still at risk of inhaling soot and other pollutants.

How does their exposure vary?

The level of exposure varied significantly by pollutant: it was found that, on average, drivers were more exposed to carbon monoxide and gaseous pollutants, while cyclists were more exposed to particulates like black carbon.

Also, since cyclists usually breath harder, they inhaled a higher amount of pollutants than the one detected by the monitoring device; their exposure was two or even three times higher than it would have been if they had, for example, walked to work.

The exposure also varied depending on the route: Fort Collins has many bicycle lanes, but they are usually located right next to car lanes; while they are helpful in promoting exercise and in keeping cyclists safe, they also expose them to the many pollutants emitted by cars and other vehicles.

Another study conducted in London, for example, showed that cyclists’ had, on average, two or three times the amount of black carbon in their lungs compared to people who did not bike within the city: the presence of black carbon in the lungs can be associated with an increased risk of heart attacks and reduced lung functions. While it is still unclear whether the benefits of cycling can offset the risks caused by black carbon, this is surely a result that needs to be taken into consideration.

Does changing routes help?

It was suggested that cyclists could lower their particulate exposure by taking alternative routes that were farther from the city centers, so data from these alternate routes were also analyzed. It was found that cyclists who took these paths managed to reduce their mean particulate exposure, but since these routes were also longer, their cumulative particulate exposure was significantly higher than if they hadn’t taken the alternate route.

During this part of the study, the alternate routes that were analyzed were still within the city, but it was not always possible for participants to take them. The next part of the study will concentrate on studying off-road paths and their effect on cyclists’ exposure.

How can we lower cyclists’ exposure to air pollution?

Our environment is still very car-centric; in some areas, cars are responsible for more than one third or even half of the air pollution; thus, one of the firsts step in reducing cyclists exposure to air pollution has to be to reduce air pollution. This can be done by promoting public transport, making it easier for people to move within the city without using a car, and by giving incentives to people who walk, bike or take the bus to work.

The location of bicycle lanes also matter: by building them farther from major roadways, it is possible to lower the cyclists’ exposure to pollutants. While this will take time, especially in cities that already have many bicycle lanes, the data from these studies will help decide the best locations and layout for the new ones that will have to be built.

The researchers in Montreal are also working on applications for smartphone and computers, which will help users choose the routes with lesser exposure.

It was also suggested to build electric-only routes, to be shared by bicycles and electric cars; while these routes would certainly be healthier – as electric cars don’t emit pollutants – it would still be necessary to build bicycle lanes in order to make cyclists safe. It is also a very radical solution that will not probably be a real possibility for many years, as electric cars are still uncommon and more expensive than regular ones.

Is cycling still healthier than driving?

While we still don’t know all the risks associated with cycling within cities, it is still reasonable to believe that cycling to work is still healthier than driving. The next part of the study, which will analyze off-road paths that are very far from major roadways, will shed some light on how alternate routes can really protect cyclists from pollution.

Cos’è la Conferenza delle Nazioni Unite sul Cambiamento Climatico?

La COP21 – 21esima Conferenza delle Parti – è un summit che si terrà in Francia dal 30 novembre 2015 all’11 dicembre 2015. Nella città di Le Bourget si riuniranno ministri ed alti funzionari da più di 190 paesi per discutere come ridurre le emissioni globali di gas serra e come tenere il riscaldamento globale al di sotto di 2° C. Il summit sarà preceduto da COY11, l’11esima Conferenza dei Giovani, che avrà luogo dal 26 al 28 novembre 2015. La Conferenza dei Giovani è un evento che si tiene prima di ogni Conferenza delle Parti; quest’anno è previsto il coinvolgimento di migliaia di persone, con workshop e attività legate ai cambiamenti climatici e ai modelli di vita sostenibile.

Qual è il risultato che ci si attende da questo summit?

Il risultato atteso di questo summit è un accordo vincolante sul cambiamento climatico, che si spera venga firmato da tutte le nazioni e che duri almeno dieci anni. Uno dei più importanti obiettivi dell’acccordo sarà quello di ridurre l’emissione di gas serra: alcuni paesi si sono già impegnati in questo obiettivo, ma anche se tutte le nazioni accettassero di ridurre le emissioni, non sarebbe sufficiente per mantenere il riscaldamento globale sotto i 2° C, e tanto meno per fermarlo. Per questa ragione, è stato suggerito di provare a coinvolgere entità diverse dagli stati come le città, le regioni e le aziende private, invitandole a fare di più e a tagliare le emissioni.

Ma allora il Protocollo di Kyoto non è bastato?

Il protocollo di Kyoto richiedeva che ciascuna nazione partecipante tagliasse le proprie emissioni del 5% entro il 2012, rispetto ai livelli del 1990. È stato adottato nel 1997, ma non poteva entrare in vigore finché non fosse stato ratificato da abbastanza paesi da rappresentare almeno il 55% delle emissioni globali. Dal momento che gli Stati Uniti – che allora erano i maggiori emettitori di gas serra – si sono rifiutati di ratificare il trattato e dal momento che le nazioni in via di sviluppo ne erano state tenute fuori, permettendo loro di aumentare le proprie emissioni per aiutare le loro economie, il protocollo non è entrato in vigore fino al 2005, quando la Russia l’ha ratificato.

Inizialmente, il protocollo di Kyoto doveva durare fino al 2012, ma durante la conferenza di Doha tenutasi in Qatar nel 2012 la sua durata è stata estesa fino al 2020. Quindi, tra cinque anni non ci sarà più alcun trattato internazionale valido sul cambiamento climatico; inoltre, adesso il maggiore emettitore di gas serra adesso è la Cina, che come nazione in via di sviluppo non era stata inclusa nel protocollo di Kyoto.

Perché è necessario un accordo globale sul cambiamento climatico?

La maggior parte degli scienziati concordano sul fatto che, se non ci impegneremo nel ridurre le emissioni di gas serra, il riscaldamento globale diventerà presto irreversibile e avrà disastrose conseguenze. Se non faremo nulla, le temperature saliranno di circa 5° C: sebbene sembri un piccolo aumento, è la stessa differenza che c’è tra il mondo di oggi e l’ultima era glaciale. Con un aumento di 5° C, il ghiaccio ai poli si scioglierà e intere città saranno sommerse dall’acqua. Intere specie di animali e piante moriranno, e tutta la razza umana sarà in pericolo.

Da un punto di vista politico, un nuovo trattato sarà necessario quando il protocollo di Kyoto non sarà più in vigore. Affinché il nuovo accordo sia efficace, dovrà essere ratificato sia dalla Cina che dagli Stati Uniti, e sarà anche importante imporre sanzioni sui paesi che non riusciranno a raggiungere gli obiettivi del trattato; ciò non è stato fatto con il protocollo di Kyoto, ed è una delle ragioni per cui non ha raggiunto i suoi obiettivi.

Perché al summit per il Cambiamento Climatico delle Nazioni Unite tenuto a Copenhagen nel 2009 non è stato firmato un trattato?

Sebbene il summit di Copenhagen non abbia portato a un trattato, la maggior parte delle nazioni hanno accettato di limitare le proprie emissioni di gas serra, anche se non abbastanza per porre fine al riscaldamento globale. Uno dei problemi che non è stato risolto è quello economico: i paesi più poveri hanno bisogno di aiuto per investire in tecnologie pulite che permetteranno loro di ridurre le emissioni, e vogliono che siano i paesi ricchi a dare loro questo aiuto. Durante il summit di Copenhagen, i paesi ricchi hanno accettato un piano di aiuti che garantirà sostegno economico ai paesi poveri fino al 2020, ma non è stato ritenuto sufficiente.

Inoltre, c’è disaccordo sulla fonte dei fondi che saranno utilizzati per gli aiuti: la maggior parte dei paesi non vogliono, o non possono permettersi di sostenere gli aiuti utilizzando solo denaro pubblico. Vogliono che siano le banche di sviluppo internazionale e le donazioni private a fornire la maggior parte dei fondi. Trovare un accordo sulla questione economica sarà probabilmente uno dei maggiori problemi che si incontreranno nel prossimo summit.

Quali saranno i punti chiave dell’accordo?

Per essere efficace, l’accordo dovrà essere universale: ciò significa che dovrà essere firmato e ratificato da tutti i paesi. Deve anche essere ambizioso, per mandare a tutti i paesi un segnale chiaro: è giunto il momento di passare a un’economia non più basata sul carbone, ma sulle energie verdi e rinnovabili. Deve inoltre essere bilanciato tra la riduzione e l’adattamento, dando a tutti i paesi abbastanza risorse per raggiungerne i requisiti, e flessibile in modo da essere adatto a paesi grandi e piccoli, sviluppati o in via di sviluppo. Infine, deve essere sostenibile e dinamico, con obiettivi a lungo termine e revisioni periodiche in modo da rafforzarne l’azione.
